Startup consulting at any stage
Where are you right now?
Idea evaluation and market research
The cheapest mistake is the one you catch at this stage. We test the idea against the Alaskan market that actually exists rather than the one in the pitch.
- Honest read on whether the demand is there
- Who else is already doing it here, and how well
- What it will genuinely cost to open
- The pricing that has to be true for this to work
Business formation and licensing
The filings are the easy part. Choosing the structure you will not have to unwind in two years is the part worth getting help with.
- Entity choice, formation and registered agent
- State business license and NAICS classification
- Borough and municipal licensing where you operate
- Banking, bookkeeping and the chart of accounts
- Insurance, contracts and the paperwork nobody enjoys
Business plans and funding
A loan officer is reading for specific things. We build the package around what gets approved rather than what sounds impressive.
- Business plan and defensible financial projections
- SBA loan preparation and packaging
- Grant identification and applications
- Investor materials and due diligence readiness
Marketing and lead generation
This is the most common call we get. Usually it is pricing, and usually the owner already suspects it.
- Where the margin is actually going
- Repricing without losing the customers you want
- Getting found: website, search and reviews
- A repeatable way to bring in work
Operations consulting and hiring
Systems that worked at one truck or one location tend to break at three. So does the owner.
- Documenting the work so someone else can do it
- First manager, first real hire, employee versus contractor
- Software and automation that removes admin hours
- Fractional COO or CMO support without a full-time salary
Business valuation and exit planning
What the business is worth and what it could be worth are two different numbers, and the gap is usually closeable with lead time.
- What a buyer will actually pay attention to
- Cleaning up the books and the operations before listing
- Succession to family or to an employee
- Working alongside your broker, CPA and attorney
Small business consulting services
You do not have to arrive with a finished idea, and you do not have to be new. Pick the pieces you need. Most consultants sell advice; we do the work with you and hand back something you can use. A plan, a filing, a price list, a system, a hire.
Idea evaluation
An honest read on whether the demand exists here, what it costs to open, and what has to be true for the numbers to work.
Business plans and projections
Business plan writing, financial modeling, unit economics and break-even analysis, built for lenders and for you.
Formation and licensing
Entity selection, registration, registered agent, EIN, operating agreements, and state and municipal licensing.
Branding and identity
Naming, positioning, logo and visual identity, and the voice you use everywhere from your signage to your invoices.
Website and eCommerce setup
Site build, product catalog, payments, shipping and tax configuration, and a store you can actually run yourself.
Marketing and lead generation
Local search, Google Business Profile, reviews, paid ads, email and content, sized to the budget you actually have.
Financial setup
Banking structure, bookkeeping systems, chart of accounts, pricing strategy and payroll, coordinated with your CPA.
Funding
SBA loan preparation and packaging, grant identification and writing, investor materials and due diligence readiness.
Operational setup
Vendors and suppliers, inventory and fulfillment, point of sale, scheduling, and the day one workflow that has to hold.
AI tools where they earn their place
We build AI and automation into the parts of your business where it removes real hours, and we tell you plainly where it is not worth the trouble.
Systems analysis and efficiency
Where the hours and the margin are going, which steps to cut, and what to automate so admin stops eating your week.
Hiring and workforce
First hire planning, employee versus contractor classification, job descriptions, pay structure and the HR compliance floor.
Ongoing advisory
Monthly or quarterly advisory, KPI dashboards, sales process design, and fractional COO or CMO support when a full time hire is not warranted.
Why hire a business consultant
A brand new business does not have one problem. It has a pricing problem sitting on top of a licensing problem sitting on top of a cash flow problem, and they are all the same problem wearing different clothes.
Specialists solve their slice and hand you back to yourself. The value of decades spent across finance, operations, marketing, sales, compliance and the actual running of businesses is that we can see which of those three problems is the real one, usually before you finish describing it.
You should not have to hire four people to answer one question.
- We work in any phaseIdea, pre-launch, open and struggling, scaling, or heading for the exit. There is no stage where it is too early or too late to bring someone in.
- We tell you when the free option is betterThe Alaska SBDC, SCORE Alaska and the Alaska Women’s Business Center do real work at no cost. If they cover what you need, we will say so and point you there.
- We use AI where it actually helpsThe tools have moved fast and most of the advice about them is noise. We know which ones remove hours from a small business and which ones create work, and we will set them up inside your operation rather than hand you a reading list.
- We produce deliverablesYou leave an engagement with documents, systems and filings instead of a summary of the meeting.
We also work on eCommerce start-ups and podcast development.
Starting a business in Alaska
It is not the same as starting one anywhere else. National guides walk you through Articles of Organization and an EIN and then stop. The parts that actually trip up Alaskan owners are the parts those guides skip, because they are specific to this state.
Alaska has no state sales tax, which sounds simple until you learn that boroughs and municipalities set their own, so what you owe depends on where you operate. A business serving Anchorage, the Mat-Su and the Kenai may be dealing with three different answers.
Every LLC and corporation registered here must maintain a registered agent with a physical Alaska street address. A PO box does not satisfy it. If you are running the business from home, or from a boat, or from a cabin outside the road system, that requirement needs a real solution rather than a workaround.
Then there is everything the guides never mention: seasonality that compresses a year of revenue into four months, freight costs that break a pricing model built on Lower 48 assumptions, and a customer base small enough that reputation moves faster than any advertising you could buy.
- Entity and state licensingFiling with the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing, plus the State of Alaska business license and the NAICS code that matches what you actually do.
- Registered agentA physical Alaska street address, maintained continuously. Not a PO box.
- Local tax and licensingBorough and municipal requirements that vary by where you operate, not where you are registered.
- Ongoing filingsReporting obligations that arrive on a schedule long after launch, when nobody is thinking about them.
Startup consulting questions
What does a startup consultant actually do?
Helps you make the decisions that are expensive to get wrong. What to build, how to price it, how to structure the business, where the money comes from, who to hire first. In our case that means working alongside you on the deliverables instead of handing you a list.
Do I need to pay you when the Alaska SBDC is free?
Often not, and we will say so. The Alaska SBDC, SCORE Alaska and the Alaska Women’s Business Center provide genuinely good advising at no cost, and if that covers your situation you should use it. People hire us when they need someone to build the thing rather than advise on it, when they need sustained availability, or when the work falls outside what a volunteer advisor can take on.
What do I need to start a business in Alaska?
At minimum an entity decision, a State of Alaska business license, and a NAICS code matching what you do. Forming an LLC or corporation means filing with the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing and maintaining a registered agent with a physical Alaska street address. Alaska has no state sales tax, but boroughs and municipalities set their own, so your obligations follow where you operate.
Do you only work with brand new businesses?
No. A large share of the work is with owners already running something who have hit a wall. Pricing that stopped working, a first hire that needs to happen, systems that broke at the current volume, or an owner who wants out of the daily grind.
How much does this cost?
It depends on what you need, and the range is genuinely broad. Start with a free consultation so we can understand the situation and scope it honestly. You get a straight number before any work begins.
Do you work outside Anchorage?
Yes. We are based in Anchorage and work across Southcentral, the Mat-Su Valley, the Interior and Southeast. In person where it helps, remotely where it does not.
